Convention Invites are Idiotic
by cookiemaster inso, like every year, there's a campaign going on about giving people convention invites and urging them to attend the convention.
what an utterly moronic waste of time.
we live 500+ kilometers away from the convention hall.

It is busywork. one thought about them I have though is, how many more years will it be before congs. print them out themselves? I could never see corporate HQ letting each publisher print them at home, the quality would vary to much. If the congregations would asked/strongly suggested/required to buy a printer set it up in the hall and print from there, that I could see. It's just 1 sheet of paper, you now have shifted costs to the congregations. The next step would be to have more 1 single sheet of paper campaigns, perhaps dropping the awake to online only, print out one page saying what's in the awake, directing them to the website. I'm just spitballing money saving ideas here, I don't see a reason why they wouldn't do some of this within 5 years -

Re: Music at Theocratic Events
by pixel inthis is a crappy letter from the watchtower.
i'm only posting it to show how micro-managers these fools are.
and at the end, they say: "we should avoid making specific rules about somewhat technical matters".

This actually makes sense and is pretty standard for most businesses with franchises. They want the music to be the same volume at all their stores, so send out a memo to all stores telling them what volume to play the music at. Things make much more sense when I think of them as just a run of the mill corporation. -

We are slowly moving away from that kind of preaching work
by oppostate injohn hoyle--jws go knocking on strangers doors and try to get inside homes to preach.. wt rep--we are slowly moving away from that kind of preaching work, we do more preaching by using literature carts and personal telephone calls.. .
the above quote is from john hoyle's website:http://insidethewatchtower.com/doctrine/phone-calls-to-bethel-jw-org-email-and-contacts/.
it's interesting, isn't it?

I don't think d2d and publishers will ever go away completely. Tract/invitation campaigns. That will become the only/vast majority of d2d work. Do a memorial campaign, regional convention, two or three "special" kingdom news tracts every year, stretch them out over 6 week period, make 30 hr aux available most months. I think they want your avg publisher just dropping off tracts not actually talking to anyone, just doing busy work. The r&f would love it! The invitation work is by far the service people want to do, it's easy! To offset costs of printing a ton more tracts, drop the awake to online only, and tell the publishers to offer a watchtower to people when interest is shown. -

Did Jason B Dunn say the "New World Translation is the most accurate translation there is?" Why make a new Bible than?
by MagicMItchJensen inthe circuit overseer mentioned something about the nwt being the most accurate translation according to professor jason b dunn, i heard this nonsense before but never really dug deep in to this topic because non of us really had a choice as jws but to accept all their random musing of our uneducated leaders as factual.
1. if the new world translation was the picture perfect translation of all the bibles and we went door to door telling everyone we had the "most honest bible", why did they change it to a paraphrased version?
what success have you had getting jehovah's witnesses to address why they tinkered with the new world translation, it was suppose to be the best translation and now it's turned in to a very loose paraphrased version.

It's Jason BeDuhn. I have his book truth in translation, he makes some interesting points. He basically says the nwt is one of the more accurate translations of John 1:1. (I've spent the last 10 minutes looking for it but can't find it right now) I wanted to quote the part where he talks about how the nwt is, at least in the verses he tested for accuracy, mostly bias free. I'll keep looking for the book -

I couldn't agree more with the comment by Traveb. He/she mentioned they were in California, but I think it's the same in any urban areas in a blue state. I call them social or ethnic witnesses. It describes about 75% of people here, and 95% of people under 30. With the big push to get screens and projectors into the halls, it's not hard to imagine a good percentage of meetings will just be streamed from corporate HQ within 5 years. -

So a few of the highlights, at least for me anyway. Dawkins and Peter boghossian talked about what's the harm in moderate or liberal type religions? The short answer, because you're still perpetuating a falsehood, and to especially teach that to children is wrong. he gave as example, imagine a child's mind like a computer, kids will accept what adults especially their parents teach them at a young age, just like a computer accepts information that you put in it. Religion is like a virus that infects a child's mind and they pass it along generation after generation. Another question they posed and talked about was so you value evidence? If evidence is presented do you change your beliefs to match it or do you dismiss it because it doesn't fit your beliefs.
Dawkins was also asked if you had a time machine what time period would you go back too? He didn't say what I I thought he'd say. He said he would go back to the origin of language.
Overall it was a really cool experience, and I'd love to go see him sometime again

Well last night was a pretty cool experience. i didn't get a chance to ask my question, it was a packed house, 800+ people were there, but something else pretty neat happened. When I walked into the venue, within 2 minutes I run right into a faded jw that I know. He was obviously pretty surprised to see me there. What was neat was he had just got done with a meet and greet with Dawkins prior to the event. He got to chat with Dawkins, introducing himself as a former jw. He said Dawkins had a pained look on his face and said, "oh, I'm sorry, are those people as terrible as I hear"? He asked if he was being shunned by his family, just because he had a different view of the universe then them. A nice un-witness was given to him.
when I have a bit more time I'll recap a few points that I really enjoyed from the evening.

I was hoping that the awake had a quote from him. I think I'm going to try and ask him about that and if he knew and what he thinks about it.
